The Internet – Your Connection to the World

In any home office or business situation, staying connected matters. In the past couple of decades setting up that office meant hooking up a phone (or multiple phone lines), getting a fax machine, usually getting a mobile phone, and an Internet connection. With all four in place the business owner was connected to the world and able to stay in touch with clients.

Staying Connected

With the current state of technology though, all of that communication equipment/cost simply isn’t necessary. In fact with just an Internet connection and a PC you can take care of all your communication needs and greatly reduce the monthly costs involved with your connection to the world.

Here are 4 simple ways to rid yourself of monthly costs for your home office:

1.    Voice to Email – Voice to email software is exactly what it suggests. It is software that allows you to send emails by recording your voice and clicking send, and also allows you to receive voice messages right to your inbox. With a good voice to email service you can have your own virtual receptionist and avoid the need for that cell phone and call forwarding (you’ll at least reduce the cellular bill).

2.    Email to Fax – If all you need is the capability to send faxes, an email to fax service will allow you to send emails and documents to fax machines worldwide. Along with simplicity, you’ll reduce your printing costs (you can send the document instead of printing it for the fax machine), and you’ll be able to send a wider variety of formats to any fax machine.

3.    Complete Fax Software – For those who need to receive faxes as well as send them, complete Internet fax solutions are available. With this type of service the costs will be minimal compared to buying a fax machine and paying long distance through a traditional phone provider.

4.    VoIP Phones – Everyone likes to save money, and for those who tend to make long distance calls often, VoIP will do just that. These services allow you to have a regular phone number and to make and receive calls through an Internet connection. With minimal monthly fees and no long distance charges many homes and businesses are changing to money-saving VoIP solutions.

Whether you run a business from your home, or just use your computer to surf the Internet, using your broadband connection for other purposes will save on your monthly communication costs.

Life in 140 Characters or Less
Since we are on the topic of communication this month, we thought it would be appropriate to take a look at the latest social networking phenomenon.

You’ve most likely heard about it on TV or read about it somewhere on the web; but if you haven’t experienced life in 140 characters or less, it might be time to check out Twitter.
Staying Connected
For those who don’t know, Twitter has been called the SMS of the Internet and is an online service that allows you to join and to communicate with others on the web. Users are allowed to gain followers and follow others conversations. Communication with those who follow you is restricted to 140 character messages that are posted instantaneously. As of February 2009 it is estimated that there are 6 million Twitter users. This makes Twitter the third largest social network on the Internet.

So what can you expect when you join this new Internet phenomenon?

Well for some, they get to hear updates from their favourite celebrity, such as Ashton Kutcher or Britney Spears. If news is more your thing, you could follow CNN and get news updates delivered to your browser or even your cell phone. There are even special interest groups to follow; you could get updates from NASA and the International Space station for example.

However you look at it, Twitter is the place to visit on the web. If you haven’t done so yet, we suggest you head over to twitter.com so that you can experience life in 140 characters or less!
