| 5 Tips to Keep Your PC Running Smoothly
In last month's newsletter we covered the importance of virus protection for your PC. This month we wanted to build upon that by giving you five more tips to keep things running fast on your PC.

Really these ideas are quite simple, but using them will help to ensure that your computer works when you need it to!
- Delete Unused File - All of those office files you have laying around from three years ago take up space. If you don't use them, delete them. Alternatively burn them to CD and delete them from your hard drive.
- Create Restore Points - PC's that run Windows XP or Vista have Windows restore built in. Create a restore point once a week to ensure you can restore your data if you need to.
- Use Disk Defragmenter - You should run disk defragmenter once a month. This will help to ensure that fragmented files are cleaned up, and disk access speeds stay fast.
- Use Disk Cleanup - Along with the disk defragmenter you should also use disk cleanup once every couple of weeks. The disk clean up tool that comes with Windows deletes temporary files that get left from Internet browsing and software usage on you computer.
- Keep Your PC Up to Date - If you don't have automatic updates turned on, ensure that you run Windows Update on a weekly basis. This will help to ensure you are protected against vulnerabilities, and help to keep your PC running smoothly.

5 Things you Didn't Know about Microsoft
Most people already know about Microsoft. As the creator of Windows, the main operating system used on computers around the world, Microsoft is one of the most powerful companies in the world. They have the power to move the PC market in any direction they want to, and the company is owned by one of the World's richest men.
In this case, we don't actually want to cover what you already know here, instead we want to give you five things you didn't know about Microsoft.
- Extreme Research - Microsoft's research division rivals most Universities. They turn out 5100 peer-reviewed papers each year, which are completed by the 850 PHD's they employ.
- Big Competitors - It would stand to reason that Microsoft's biggest competitors would be Apple or Linux vendors. In reality though, their biggest competitors are software pirates.
- Big Growth - In 1975 employed 3 people and had $16,000 in revenue. Last year, they employed 96,000 people and had revenues that topped $60 billion.
- Accidental Business - When Microsoft was contracted to provide an operating system for IBM computers, their main focus was to get there programming language (Basic) to run on IBM PC's. There entry into the operating system market wasn't their first intention.
- Microsoft Doesn't Sell Software - It may surprise you to know that MS doesn't sell software at all. In fact their entire revenue model is built around selling users the rights to use their software. Their licensing model is revocable (they can take their software back), and is based upon Bill Gate's original sales model from 1976.
Microsoft will likely always be a big player in the world of technology. You now have 5 tidbits of information, that you may not have known, about everyone's favorite software vendor. |
