Internet Safety 101 - Is Your PC Spying on You?
With the current state of awareness when it comes to using a computer, and especially using a computer online, you’d think that more Internet users would be safer than ever before. More and more people can tell you what Spyware is, they know what Adware is, and in general they have the knowledge to keep their PCs clean and running smoothly. A recent (government-backed) study in the U.S. paints a different picture though.
The study looked at 6000 computer users and it showed that 80% of those users (who use the Internet on a regular basis) don’t even have a firewall. Worse than that, close to 75% of those same users had Spyware and Adware infecting their PC. The worst PC in the study had over 1000 Spyware programs monitoring and recording all of the user’s online activity.
I know we talk about this topic often, but since protecting yourself from these types of problems is so simple we wanted to reiterate what it takes to ensure you don't end up like 80% of Internet users in the U.S.

Protecting Your PC
There are a few basic tools you need to ensure your PC is safe when you use it online. Not only will these tools protect the computer itself, and keep it running smoothly, it will also ensure your personal data stays personal and doesn’t end up in the hands of a criminal.
-
Firewall – A firewall keeps your computer safe from intrusion by hackers and malicious software. If you use Windows XP or Windows Vista, ensure you keep the firewall turned on.
-
Virus Protection – Depending on where you bought your PC, it likely came with a Virus scanner. Be sure to keep the license up to date and update the software regularly.
-
Malware Protection – A good program to scan for Adware and Spyware is also important. Some virus scanners also protect you against Spyware, but not all of them. Take the time to ensure that yours does, and if it doesn’t get a Spyware scanner separately.
-
You – Finally you are also part of the equation. Don’t open attachments in emails if you don’t know what they are, and be cautious of clicking links in junk mail. Also be sure to ensure that you are on the site you intended when entering usernames, passwords, or personal information.
With a few simple steps you can help yourself to ensure that you are protected when you’re online. Taking these steps will keep your PC running like it should, and help to ensure that your computer isn’t spying on you.
We recommend Kaspersky for all your Virus/Adware protection. If you have any questions please send us an email (

Is Your Boss Spying on You?
Since we’re on the topic of Spying this month we thought it would be pertinent to ask. Is your boss spying on you?
When it comes to computer use at work (or computer misuse that is) surfing the web, emailing friends, and spending time on Facebook have become increasingly common in the last decade. With that usage though, the loss of productivity that sometimes ensues has employers fighting back. Too many use work computers for personal use, thinking that they are safe as long as the boss doesn’t see. Unfortunately that isn’t always the case and it just happens that your boss may be watching what you do.
Just ask Thomas Blakely who got fired when the company email filter recorded the email he sent out with his resume attached. Or ask Amanda Johnson whose fiery Internet romance made even her boss blush!
Many companies install software to monitor email, Internet usage, and even their employee's keystrokes (that which you type on the keyboard).
If you’ve used a company computer for reasons other than work lately you’ve got to ask yourself, is your boss spying on you?
If you think he is, then you may already know that visiting cheaters-r-us, or spending time on your favourite social network, is a bad idea. The question then becomes, if you’re boss is so busy spying on you, who's checking in on him?
